(Autistic adult here!) When people use terms “high/low functioning” they mean their ability to function in society independently (things like working a job, cooking and cleaning for themselves etc.). Autism is also a SPECTRUM for a reason! When referring to people with autism I’ve learned and love describing people’s abilities based on support needs. You can say “my son has high/low support needs” or you can say something like “my son needs x amount of support, but is pretty independent overall” it’s extra syllables but it’s less dehumanizing. Personally, im extremely independent, but need some support with keeping track of my medication and when to refill, and also a lot of financial things, but overall I have minimal support needs. I also love referring to the Autism spectrum as a soup. Everyone’s soup has different ingredients (Egg drop soup, chicken noodle soup, miso soup) but it’s still soup, some may have the same exact ingredients (chicken broth, carrots, etc) and some may have similar ingredients while differing in other places. :)

I do agree, the problem I have with “functioning” as a term is that it kind of brushes the struggles faced by “high functioning” folk under the carpet, while also downplaying the skills and strengths of “low functioning” folk. For me I prefer support needs as it just sounds a lot more nicer, plus there isn’t as much space for assumption. Instead of assuming “he can’t do that, he’s low functioning” or “he must be able to do that, he’s high functioning” people instead then get more of an idea of the level of support they need, plus it doesn’t minimise anyone’s struggles, or downplay anyone’s strengths

I feel the same way with the levels - I have been saying for years that levels can change and only really matter for a diagnostic perspective when our kids are young.

I’d say the main difference between high and low functioning is that people with high functioning autism can live independently and go to normal school and low functioning cannot

High function is isaac netwon and nikola tesla. You insinuating that darius could be high functioning is narcissistic and absurd
