I’m so proud of this mom for not giving up and even after seeing several lactation consultants in person, she was able to come to us virtually and we got Baby off of the nipple shield right on the spot!! Nipple shields are a great tool, but they are a tool and we want to ask “why?”, why is this tool necessary? In Baby‘s case, Baby was not positioned in a way to get a deep latch and to be able to hold onto Mom‘s somewhat flatter nipples. Once we were able to reposition Baby and support Mom‘s breast and nipple, Baby was able to successfully latch. Mom literally said “wow I did not expect that so fast”. I’m so grateful that we are able to help families all around the world virtually. This mom was hesitant initially because often times we think that “breastfeeding and latching help” can only be done in person, but I can’t tell you how many families we’ve helped virtually. At @aloha.nutrition we are a team of IBCLC lactation consultants and dietitians and we offer virtual lactation help no matter where you’re located.
