@amoderntherapist: 1. I’d get curious about what I’m trying to improve. It is not on having to self-diagnose but knowing both generally and specifically what I’d like to change: . “I want to feel more connected with others and I think I may have depression.” . 2. I’d think about the type of therapist factors that may help me feel safe (ethnicity, gender, identities, political, religious.. etc)… and I’d consider if I’m more likely to share in-person or online? . 3. I’d search therapist profiles that match these factors and find one that specifically works with the difficulty I have as opposed to one who says they treat 30+ disorders. . 4. I’d ask for a phone or email consultation with them and I’d ask these questions: . “Can you please explain to me your theoretical approach and how that may help someone with depression?” . “What has your experience been with regard to a timeline of improvement when treating depression?” . “How do you measure change in therapy and know if it is ‘working’?” . 5. In the first session I’d be sure to articulate what I’m trying to change and what my hopes are: . “I want to feel less depressed and I hope I’m able to start dating again and expand my friend group..” . *What else would you add to this list? . #startingtherapy #therapy #MentalHealth #psychologist
🙈 …OR… you wait till the inner pain is no longer bearable and you feel talking to someone is your very last chance and when T asks what brought you here and starts explaining how they work you just blur ‘please I just need help…’ 🙈
