@kentsports: These TV holes built into every new house in the early 2000’s may be the biggest future technology miscalculation ever seen in the construction industry
I think the biggest mix in home construction where homes built in the 60’s that where not build with solar panel braces.

They were built for the current TVs at the time. So that those buyers could put their TVs there. They weren’t trying to predict the future

TV screens were square for like 90 years. They’ve been rectangular for less than 20.

No houses didn’t come with those, never seen any house like that.

When you realize they built it for the TVs that they had at the time. Not for 30 years in the future. Just like what we are doing now. 🤔

they were rectangle because you need space for the VCR / DVD player / cable box. they weren't predicting the future. just building things for the way things were at the time. why were you expecting them to know how tvs would changed? this is a odd thing to fixate on.

Go old school. Put a safe in there and hang a picture on hinges

Blaming the construction industry for building around the available technology is wild.

AND you have to sometimes pay just to get rid of those beasts of a TV, you’re better off just making it into a fish tank

We made it so all our internet gear fits behind our flat screen that fits in the space in front. We had doors on ours and were able to close them up as well.

put an extendable mount in there, attach to the back wall and use the cubby for storage, remotes and such

I’ve never seen a box like that above a fireplace, this is a very custom build. I’ve seen plenty of custom cabinets from the late 90s that are built for CRTs. As for what to do with it? I’d wire all of my networking stuff to that cabinet since the coax cable (where your internet might come from) is likely right there. Run some cat6 to all the rooms and you have a great spot for network management.

why would you want it to be the shape of a TV that didn't exist yet

you can't really call it a miss TVs were the same shape for 70 years I worked at Circuit City and when they went out of business in 2009 we still sold Square TVs. in fact June 2009 is when network tv shifted to widescreen as a standard. even dvds were sold in widescreen or full screen up until that time. as far as your hole the answer is super easy. buy a cantilever mount and a TV larger than the hole. it will completely hide it and you can keep your cable box, ps5, etc behind it for a clean look

You can get a mount that goes inside of it and it extends to cover outside the surface so you can fit a huge flat screen. Did it at my house

No the construction industry didn’t design this. I bet homeowners were asking for it, and they were the ones shortsighted for the developing technology. Builders just build what will sell now.

You took a TV out of the cubby, just put another TV in front of the cubby. You already have the power and cable outlets there.
