Why not understand it as a move by China to balance the relationship between India and other countries? With this hydropower station, India needs to think carefully about the consequences the next time it shuts down its hydropower station and stops the water from flowing to Pakistan. Isn't this good?

The fact that a single tributary could provide clean energy to so many people goes to show the Earth has more than enough for everyone to live well if we could focus our efforts on progress instead of conflict.

A lot of people doesn’t. This water electric system is not a Dam. Dam is made by creating a man made water system where it HOLDS the water. This system is made underwater and uses the fast streams of the water body to generate electricity. People need to pull up the map as this part of the water is like snake where it is not straight and it twists and turns. Therefore traditional Dam won’t work.

There will be tunnel chanelling water through, using the 2700m drop, to generate electricity, with a small holding dam to optimize flow. This is just a small part of the hydropower scheme in the region. The main thing, apart from the electricity, is the infra structure investment will reinforce Chinese power and influence in that area, up in the Himalayas and the tibetan plateau, which is presently mainly uninhabitted and unexploited. Imaging the development and employment possibilities nearby in the next decade. The investment of US$170 billion (for ten years) for the project, a small part of total infra structure investment in China, will be challenging for others to match.

The Yarlung Zangbo, which is north of the Himalayas, only accounts for 2-3% of the total discharge of the Brahmaputra. Most of the discharge comes from lower tributaries south of the Himalayas, which come from rainfalls of the Indian Ocean monsoons.

Thanks Sir for your commentary on this issue. As you mentioned hydropower dams do not consume water.

Either you are a lier or ignorant. The reason why dams can be used as weapon is because they can decide when to let water flow and when to hold. They can during water shortage and let it flow at 3x the natural speed when it is already heavily raining downstream. You would have mostly left the place if you could.

I think they are digging a tunnel thru the mountain to have a high drop in height instead of building a dam. so there is no blocking of water flowing

India may complain just to test international reactions, but it can't actually stop anything - let alone pick a fight with China. The Modi government is currently squeezed between US tariffs and its failed confrontation with Pakistan. Domestically, economic growth is slowing while 'Make in India' remains stalled with heavy dependence on Chinese inputs. With few cards left to play, their Commerce Minister had no choice but to visit Beijing for damage control.

it is not of India's biz since the water source is within China. Modi need to deal with it. China can keep the water security for Xinjiang for new development, to take care of reforestation and agriculture. it also provide hydropower for the region

This is low carbon energy. Is not this what China promise to achieve during some green energy convention? India is concerned about this energise the Tibet which will in turn enrich the Tibet province

This major project is clearly not a short-term plan, due to inadequate technology and other reasons, but does not include India. The storage capacity only affects about a quarter of the water flow in India. Can you understand the severity of flood disasters in Bangladesh
