In 1847, Utah was owned by Mexico, but it was not occupied by Mexico. The Saints didn't become Mexicans, nor did they seek or obtain legal Mexican status, so they were actually not immigrants at all. They were refugees fleeing persecution. Nothing more

my Mormon family and ancestors tried SO hard to hide any Mexican heritage we have. there are no names listed on the tree, just John Does from Mexico. Whenever I ask about it I get told we aren't until grandma spilt the tea and confirmed it via DNA testing.

I saw a comment that said “The Mexicans never claimed that territory either.” NAURR Mexico has a notoriously respected indigenous tribes and their original settlements.. they never “claimed” their territory out of fear. They respected their land.
