The same happened to Islam. Prophet Mohamed never wrote the Hadith. Infact he was against writing anything other than Quran in the case anything gets in the way of Qurans accuracy. He never praised himself in the prayers he never gave salam to himself in the prayers and he definitely never gave salam and put his friends and colleagues name in his prayers while praying to God. He commanded monotheism. But after his death people decided Quran is not enough and started writing about his life and made four books now even though Quran says it’s fully detailed, and the verses asks it’s followers, “is this Quran not enough for your although God sent you this book fully detailed?” People decided it’s not enough. Quran prohibits dividing the religion to sects but here we are with more than 50 and counting.

You are right when you say, that Jesus didn't die because of God's wrath. Don't listen to churches. He died to show us how a human being can overcome death. This is necessary for us to learn, and he will send us back to earth as often as it takes to achieve what he did in one life.
