@gentlegiantselephant: ‼️Breaking News: Border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand - Surin Province was hit by missiles, shot by Cambodia, just hours ago. First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who is affected by this situation. ❤️ 🐘🐘🐘 At this current time, all of GG's elephants are safe!! We are reaching out to several "boots on the ground" to get more details, which we will share as soon as we can. ********************************* For decades, temples have been a source of conflict in border disputes between Cambodia and Thailand, with each laying claim to centuries-old worship sites perched on the mountains that divide the two nations. Now, a months long stand-off between Cambodia and Thailand turned into a deadly exchange of fire. On July 24, 2025, Thailand launched airstrikes and Cambodia fired artillery and rockets along their disputed border, with clashes occurring in areas near the Ta Muen Thom temple along the border of Thailand's Surin province and Cambodia's Oddar Meanchey province. Casualties included at least 12 Thai civilians killed, 14 injured, 1 soldier killed, and extensive damage to homes and property. 🐘 Elephants and the conflict zone - Surin Province is known for its captive elephant population, particularly in areas like Ban Ta Klang, also known as "the elephant village," which houses a significant portion of Thailand's captive elephants. The area near the border where the clashes occurred, while having human residents, is not explicitly described as containing wild elephant habitats or elephant camps. POSSIBLE AFFECTS ON CAPTIVE & WILD ELEPHANTS: It's possible that the missile strikes and associated fighting could have indirectly impacted elephants in the following ways: Stress and fright: The loud noises and explosions from artillery and airstrikes could have caused stress and fear among elephants, potentially leading to behavioral changes or even stampedes if they were in the vicinity. Disruption of routines: If elephants or their owners/mahouts were located near the conflict zone, their routines could have been disrupted, potentially affecting their access to food, water, or necessary care. Habitat degradation: Depending on the extent of the damage, the conflict could cause some level of habitat degradation, which could indirectly impact elephants or other wildlife. www.gentlegiantselephants.org #elephant #gentlegiants #ThailandCambodiaConflict #BorderClashes #Cambodia
