ok but if someone read a book outloud to you like a bedtime story for example, you wouldnt say you've read it.. it was read to you sure but you yourself didnt read it

Its just literally not reading, it activates a different part of your brain: the auditory part. As long as you RETAIN the info you heard, thats all that matters. Im not trying to nitpick; i understand that this feels like a nitpick… and maybe it is, but you just havent read it. Again no hate.

Actors are reading their lines on a TV show, so you’re saying I’m actually reading while watching tv, awesome!

i read somewhere that whatever happens on your brain when you physically read is the same thing that happens when you listen to audio books . so yes , same thing .

Is the book being absorbed by your brain? Then it’s reading. People who disagree are just trying to gatekeep READING. Weirdos.

My toddlers love reading books, but get this… they are toddlers and can’t read words yet so I read to them and they READ AUDIBLY through me 🤗 same thing

It’s such an ableist way of thinking. How are people who are blind or have severe vision issues supposed to read?

Except for when audiobooks take out paragraphs from the books so you miss out on parts of the book 🥲 just happened to me recently when I was listening and reading along and realized how much the audiobook was leaving out

Any blind person that listens to an audiobook, still read that book.

It may not be “reading” but it stimulates the same parts of your brain as if you had the book in your hand.

People are so pressed about counting audiobooks then STILL have something to say (ie, “what do you do for work?” “You must not have kids” “do you ever leave your house?”) when it’s physical books. Like why are people so mad about people consuming literature at their own pace 😭

yeah okay it’s not “technically reading” whatever i’m still gonna say “i read this book the other day” or “i’ve read this many books this year” it’s simpler

I have a MS in Library and Information Science. We can put this debate to rest, listening to audiobooks IS reading. Period.

My philosophy is If someone came up to me and said hey have you read this book let’s talk about it! I’m not going to say no, because I did read it and I know everything that happens

I love reading and listening to audiobooks. I don’t consider them the same thing. I have one book going on my kindle and a different one on my audible. When I have time to sit down I’m reading the one I have on my kindle. When I’m doing things around the house I’m ✨listening✨ to the one on audible. I value my audiobooks. But I don’t feel like I’m reading them.

I just say I “listened” to a book if it was an audiobook, and I “read” when I read a physical book. Both the same thing in terms to processing a book. But yeah… listening is not “reading” … thats just fact. I don’t understand the defensiveness people have about it lol.
