This is the exact contradiction that comes with the bootstraps mentality, when we aspire for generational wealth we act as if those who already have it got it through legitimate means. WE ARE NOT BRIDGING A GAP OF 300+ YEARS OF FREE LABOR THROUGH “FINANCIAL LITERACY” or anything resembling that. You only get that type of bag through violence and exploitation, the play cannottt work for us

Happens with food and Black owned businesses…they wanna charge top dollar but give poor quality. Trying to run up a bag and reach the same level as white capitalism too quick! Good take overall 💯

I do want to add though, that Howard’s prestige magnifies the outrage by 100%, doesn’t mean that this is a mutually exclusive phenomenon. However, I think because we can see the continuity of this issue at other HBCU institutions, I feel like a conclusion we can come to is that complicity within the macrocapitalist system—-that is inherently white—-will always put HBCUs at this inherently contradictory position. IE: creating a purely (necessary) black institution w/quality education at the expense of somebody else (it’s students, faculty, etc.). Your take hyperfocuses on its complicity because overzealous / inflated prestige, rather the system that leaves us to have to reckon with this. (This conversation gets into public funding, the disproportionate amount of black to black students at white vs HBCU colleges, etc.)

This is spot on. HU and many, if not all, HBCUs don't have the privilege to move like ivy or even regular PWIs.

That’s why moving like white capitalists will never create lasting generational wealth if the community is still falling behind you. You can’t win their game

This is NOT how endowments and institutional aid work! This is a harmful take! Howard and HBCUs operate the way they do because they don’t prioritize student retention or stewardship because they know they dont have to do hard work to recruit. Plain and simple. They do not prioritize stewardship in the same way as PWIs. The eay capitalism involves itself is in how Howard has chosen to run itself as a bare bones institution that operates according to 80s based principles surrounding the privatization of public services like their food and dorms and other systems.

I almost agree. I don't think howard is raising tuition for the sake of capitalism and raising tuition. Everything in our society is inflated and increasingly expensive. If your household expenses have gone up then so have theirs. The issue then comes back to as you said: Howard does not have the endless money of a white ivy or white elite institution. Howard has 1B dollar endowment and 14,000 students. My small liberal arts college in Memphis Tennessee has 500M endowment and only 2,000 students. already half of Howard's and a 7th of the student population. Why? because white billionaire families you've never even heard of go to my school. Schools like Harvard have 57B endowments. 57x more wealth than Howard. I think everyone's idea of what Howard is actually capable of doing financially is skewed. It simply cannot actually afford to pay the gaps for students like the ivies. Well... at least not for 14,000 students...... And this is not to ignore the admin issues but the universities yall are comparing to have exponentially more full time administrators that Howard cant afford and lower student to faculty ratios that Howard may need to model. But that also opens a whole other can of worms on admissions and acceptance rate.

I can add to this. It’s also in the same aspect with “luxury” universities ex. Howard, Yale, Stanford, resonate with people because of their name so they want to go to those universities just because of the name, in the same way people only buy products that are name brand.
