They didn't grow up with tech like how millennials. Tech was temperamental we had to learn how to tinker or figure it out. Plus we had computer class in high school. Now I think they assume kids should just know how to use them now but they need to go back to teaching the basics throughout grade school again. We were required to pass spacific computer classes to graduate.

If the next gen doesn’t know something it’s the previous generation’s (parents and teachers) fault. We have to teach them!!!

I grew up using computers, but I don't use one anymore. every time I go to the library to use a computer, I literally don't know how to use word or Excel anymore. those programs change so much, especially Gmail. The phone has taken over our lives. whoever is using a computer is living in the past. it's all about the phone now.

yes, but... they can write an entire report, complete with sources cited, on their phone 😅

I blame apple for normalizing having computers where you don't have to know anything in both their computers and their cell phones to use them

It's because of all these crunchy parents that are so scared their child might have some screen time.

It’s because of cell phones. Back in our day we only had a computer and we were figuring out out to download music and movie, and jail breaking phone. Now they don’t need any of those skills lol

I'm a k-12 teacher, it's the Chromebooks and removal of computer labs/the computer rooms in homes. the kids aren't taught how. also, all they use is Macs when they do decide to buy a computer of their own because they're familiar with Apple/most likely have an iphone.

Windows hid "my documents", made an app store, and tried to be more phone like. We really need kids to learn a standard type OS.

Nobody gave them a desktop running a version of windows where everything was still easy to find and change. It’s all still the same, but it’s all hidden by a touchscreen facade of a front end, they never had to look behind the curtain

In the 90’s, computer users had to know how to make the thing work. Windows users had to know a little DOSS. In the 1920’s, automobile owners knew how to adjust the carburetor. Today, I open my hood, and I barely know what I’m looking at.

My Dad studied vacuum tube electronics. He learned everything there was to know about vacuum tubes. 2 years later, transistors hit mainstream.
Are we studying tubes?

because they've always had apps. they didn't have to learn a program.

It's not a mystery. The biggest change in tech products over the last 20 years has been designing systems for use by the lowest common denominator to achieve the widest adoption of a product. As such there has been a real lack of need to learn the skills to trouble shoot and problem solve on our more powerful platforms

I had the same problem! It's because no one has a home computer anymore. We millennials got to play and figure things out on the home computer.

They don’t teach computers. They give the kids a few programs like Blackboard to use- or they had IPads that do not translate to computer knowledge.

This❤️❤️❤️🥰🥰🥰 I fostered my niece and all they know is social media stuff, not the practical things like actually knowing how to use the computer. They are not tech savvy like people think. 🤔 🥺🥺 correct I’ve witnessed them not knowing how to write a proper email.

In 84 I was talking to my uncle about guidance as far as tech. He was at AT&T for a long time as a tollie and then went to wireless and was an internal trainer for the engineers, mostly transport and PSTN stuff because a lot of the engineers were just computer nerds.

I'm also a professor. One of my in-class soapbox rants is the "digital natives" scam run by conservatives of the 2000's to defund technology education. Those kids, labeled as "natives" are now in college and don't know how to do anything because they were never taught and never had experiences in which to learn. This is also exactly what education experts at the time predicted would happen.

I worked in instructional tech so I defiantly have my observations and opinions about this. From my vantage point it’s a symptom of a broader issue in education today. The focus and education today is unfortunately on standardized test performance metrics standardized tests ask a student to regurgitate the information they have learned. This has led to an education system that prioritizes memorization in the ability to follow (cont.).

It’s the phones and tablets. Especially Apple. Unless you already have previous knowledge, there is no concept of import, export, conversion, filing, and even just general settings. And God forbid you want to open the terminal and start putting in commands. Some of the kids nowadays just assume that anything with a screen is a touchscreen. Some kids have played video games for years without ever having picked up a controller.

1. They were raised on phones which don’t have proper file management 2. They were raised on computers that “just worked.” My students are the same way
