@melissaspeaksdog: Plus a little lesson on how diagnostics work #vettechsoftiktok #vettechtok #vetmedproblems #vetmed #vettechlife🐾💉 #justvettechthings #vetmedlife
I just saw a lady who did BW for diagnostics and then goes onto list everything the vet tried to offer (rads, ultrasound, biopsy, etc) and declined all of them and said “THE VET DID NOTHING” like u declined EVERYTHING

also like diagnostics are usually done in a sequence when budget is a factor. i had a foster kitten crash a few weeks ago - budget is limited since i’m a rescuer so we started with basic bloodwork. that didn’t give us answers so we moved forward onto x-rays which indicated that it was likely heart failure. we then ran one more lab to confirm that diagnosis and unfortunately it was congestive heart failure. if u stop after the first set of diagnostics just cuz u didn’t get a clear answer, yeah ur not gonna get an answer!! u have to move forward to the next kind until you (hopefully) do.

My doctors would always tell owners diagnostics can tell you two things- what it is and/or what it isn’t. You’ll either confirm appropriate treatment or cross something off a list and get one step closer to an answer.

And the pets can’t tell us what’s wrong! Frontline testing for most illnesses are going to be comprehensive panels and CBCs so that we can make sure basic functions are normal and do more advanced diagnostics from there

It's so hard to just guess what's wrong with a pet beses on "fluffy wasn't wanting to eat or drink last week" like idk what happened while you were out last week either, Janet! 😑

Personally if there was a scary list of differential diagnosises i would like the vet to do diagnostics to narrow it down! Not a scam!!

We had a dog at my clinic recently that had a lot of issues, and then her condition started declining. We did a lot of blood work, x-rays, ultrasound, had an internist come to the clinic to consult about her, but didn't really find an answer about what was going on. She passed at an ER over a holiday weekend, and in the records was quoted as saying she "has no faith in her GP because they aren't helping her, and so is looking for a new RDVM who will work with her". If she get a a new dog, she's not welcome back.

I work in emergency vet med. Just took my cat in because he wasn’t eating, he was hiding, and flopping on the floor for no known reason. There is NOTHING wrong with him. The next morning he was FINE: we ruled out a urinary blockage, cancer, azotemia, and a foreign body. I was so relived. It was a bill of almost $2,000 before insurance. But my piece of mind is so important.

$800 and they told me NOTHING. 🤦🏼♀️are the kidney values normal? Ok, so that tells us something. What about liver values? If they are normal that tells you something. Any anemia? What about albumin? I can’t stand the attitude of “I spent money on diagnostics that came back normal so it was a waste of money” NO!! That’s just ignorance at its finest. If medicine were as easy as tests saying “here is the diagnosis” then we would have A LOT more people in medicine…it is so rarely black and white 🤦🏼♀️

also people love to complain about the cost of going to the vet without actually knowing what it costs the clinic to be able to provide those services... like yeah, they're still a business that needs to make money at the end of the day

If we are scamming on ANYTHING it’s the nail trims and the anal glands because those are zero cost procedures and they are still so quick to ask for that even when the dog dyin 🙄

Owner who volunteers at a vet clinic; I have had so so many tests done on my own pets that have come back negative. I just don’t get it. A negative test is still an answer! Just not the one you always want lol. I own horses; we regularly will run upwards of $1,000 in tests (often excluding travel to far away clinics) just to find something ridiculously benign. Or the opposite; my mare had a basket of symptoms for nearly a year and finally on a Hail Mary we had one more x ray (had 3 prior) and found presumed skull cancer. She had to be euthanized. But it was still an answer. We ran everything from hormones, Lyme, regular bloods, x rays, exams, etc. Animals are expensive; and unfortunately it doesn’t always end up the way we want. But that doesn’t mean it’s the vets fault!
