Backpropagation is one of the most beautiful mathematical discoveries. It's incredibly elegant and exploits linear algebra/ calculus. When it clicks it's hard not to appreciate it.

What they left out is that backpropagation was inspired by the brain's mechanism for learning. The algorithm was inspired by the observation that the brain utilizes feedback connections and error signals to refine neural connections. Also, human brains are also constantly predicting the next word during language processing. So, that was also inspired by the human brain.
