As much as I love dancing I had to take a back seat as a dancer (mostly so my little could have her creative space given all her struggles the last year and a half). When we were both dancing it was hard cause she was in keiki classes and so that meant more time at practices less time to rest for myself. I would listen to Pehe on my commute mentally making up choreo and hoping to remember it when I got somewhere I could practice. If I took BART (Bay Area lol) I would dance from home, to the station, the station to the office and back again. It was exhausting. But on the flip side, my bad days were always left on that dance floor. Those bad days I looked for pro practice because I knew I could let it all out… the anger and pain I had at the time. The sadness when my Lola passed. And now, as a halau mom, i find joy watching my daughter dance. She’s been dancing since she was 10 and love watching her journey. It’s give and take.

i didnt have a gym membership, dancing is my workout so go early to warm up with the keikis/beginner classes when they do across the floors for a more intense workout. Thankfully my job hours is m-f 630-3pm so i can do shows on the weekends n practice at night. I love it; im fortunate to balance both. Its stressful during comp season a bit cuz extra practices

It’s exhausting and a struggle and even harder once you add kids on top of it. Sometimes it means you miss practices, you are behind on choreography and you feel “less dedicated” than others. However, for those of us who love it, we find a way eventually, even if that means taking big breaks in between in our “dance career”.

I think it's good to balance, a few of my friends are instructors here on Oahu, they have real jobs on the side in order to have a good retirement and pension and so they can buy a house one day

For the last few months I was working full time, had a part time server job on the side, was finishing grad school, and was going to dance practice (ours is only once a week), gymming and what not. It was a lot but I found dance and gymming to be my “me” time and I prioritized that! I’d have to practice on weekends or some evenings for at least just 15 minutes for choreo + research so I can stay on top of things.

Hard. I wish I could give dance more, but I have so much on my plate. Some times work comes first.

Without going too far into complaining, the reality is you’re always playing chess trying to find the time and sometimes you are exhausted and don’t have the energy to dance even though you love it.

Since I’m mostly an 8-5 worker, it’s actually an easy balance for me. The days I have practice are carved out so I know what days I can’t make plans on. But it does complicate doing shows/ I end up never doing shows.

Depends on the job. When i was getting paid less, the job was (kinda) easier where i had enough time during the day to sneak in dance stuff (planning, designing, research, choreo, formations, etc) and still had energy to go class after (3-4 days/wk minimum, 2-3 hr/ea). But now…. Great pay, harder job, I’m lucky to have enough energy for my main class, and i spend my workday missing the days i had more time to sneak in dance things, and now i go 1.5 days/wk, 1.5 hr/ea… not counting random extra day(s) to catch up on dance stuff 😭

Definitely struggle through it. Depression hits. Living between different states and trying to be a dancer is not for the weak. My job requires me to travel often means I have to decided on what I can participate in and miss out on.

Ghetto. dancing usually falls by the wayside for years at time and then I try and pick it back up and then it falls again.

I go thru the stress of it because it’s always worth it in the end. To feel what you feel after a good rehearsal, after a performance.

Before kids, it was the perfect balance. With kids it’s hard and nearly impossible.

It’s exhausting especially now that I’m teaching since I have to worry about choreography and costumes too. But it’s worth it when I see my dancers perform.

Exhausting lol but in the most beautiful way. When I haven’t had dance, I feel off center. It’s my outlet. It helps me stay balanced

It’s tough. I tried to balance it a year or two ago, but honestly I’ve stopped because it was taxing on my body and had to care for myself :( hoping to come back though, and stronger.

Sis it’s really tiring and not only physically taxing, but emotionally. But when I do get the privilege to move my body, I ALWAYS feel great at the end.
