MORE ABOUT GARLIC I JI - My most asked question is where do I order my seed garlic from. Ive ordered only from MADRIVERGARL!CGROWERS for every year Ive grown garlic and highly suggest them. They are g organic garlic farm with 40+ varieties to choose from. I originally found them because they are a similar growing zone to me. - Ive planted mostly hardneck garlic over the years. Hardneck and soft neck are simply the stems of the garlic. Hardneck is more advised for cooler winters. This last year I also added softenck into the mix and I had a great harvest of it and its storing great! Softneck tends to store a lot longer then hardneck, but hardneck has a lot better of a flavor in my experience and I highly suggest growing it! - I typically plant the last week of October and Harvest between the first and second week of June. I harvest when about 1/2 of the leaves have died back. Each left represents a paper layer and if you let 2 many die back it could result in poor storage or even rot in the ground. 1/2 way tends to be a good balance because you also dont want to harvest to soon either. With hardneck about 1 month prior to harvest a stem will form called a scape. I remove these as its been known to help send the energy to the bulb resulting in a bigger bulb. You can also eat the scapes which taste amazing!! - Ive played around with spacing over the years. Anywhere between 4-8 inches apart. I HIGHLY SUGGEST going as close to inches between as possible. If your doing raised beds this allows for good airflow without everything being supper crammed. I had more consistent larger bulbs by giving more room!! I planted less garlic this year but grew 7 more pounds this year and this was a big factor! THE LARGER THE CLOVE GOING INTO THE GROUND THE BETTER IN MY EXPERIENCE. Plant 2-3 inches deep. - FEED YOUR GARLIC!! At planting make sure you amend beds. If you can soil test prior I highly suggest doing so. This will tell you the PH/anything your soil might be missing. When it comes to feeding the garlic in the late winter/ spring/ Ive found foliar feeds to be my new favorite thing! I love feeding with a fish and seaweed fertilizer to be my favorite so far! I did feedings every 10-14 days with the garlic this year. Years prior I did a combo of blood meal earlier on and bone meal after. Most graduals you don't have to apply often and will feed your plants for weeks on end. - The seed free mulch I use is one called EZ Straw, The Foliar Feed is from Neptunes Harvest, My garden spayer is from petra tools! Most linked in my storefront in bio. #garlic #growyourownfood #backyardhomestead #backyardgarden #gardening #growinggarlic #gardentok #howtogrowgarlic
