Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disease that occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles. My subject model Zelda Burborough is a lady who is living with Alopecia. I had the pleasure of discovering Zelda through Changing Faces - a charity which highlights people with visible differences. Zelda is one of Changing Faces campaigners. After reading her story on their website. I was profoundly moved. I instantly felt compelled to draw her and include her in my series “Drawing Awareness”. Two months after receiving the news that her father died, Zelda experienced losing her hair. What had started out as patchy hair loss on her scalp, gradually turned into losing the entire hair on her scalp and body - which is known as Alopecia Universalis (AU). Zelda felt she lost a sense of who she was after losing her hair. Upon meeting Zelda, she had expressed to me that having Alopecia has been a challenging experience emotionally whereby her self confidence was impaired - affecting her mental health. Being a campaigner for Changing Faces has offered Zelda comfort knowing that she wasn’t alone with her visible difference. About 2% of people across the world will experience having alopecia at some stage in life. Today, Zelda wears her condition boldly. Accepting her visible difference, in turn, has given others who may have a similar condition the courage to reveal themselves openly. Zelda’s story personally touched my soul. Meeting her in person was inspirational. Her openness had allowed me to fully connect with her portrait and capture her courageous spirit. #Alopecia #Universalis #DrawingAwareness #ZeldaBurborough #VisibleDifference #Skin #ChangingFaces ##Pencil #Drawing #Portrait #Artist
