i definitely think there is a way to go about it that wouldn't seem rude. if you preface by saying that you are an author and wanted a writing exercise and you weren't trying to do it because it's a bad story you just wanted to make it more readable because it is a good story that might let them know that you are not trying to be rude or say their story is bad you just wanted to help.
