I'm very sure the freedom motif is used in battles YOU CHOOSE to do, that's why all secret bosses has it except The Knight, you fight the Knight regardless whether you want it or not, it's your choice to keep trying but it's not something you can skip

what if the freedom motif isnt actually about freedom and more about impersonation? Jevil says hes the only one truly free, passing as if he isnt imprisoned. spamton is only a puppet who wants to be more we see statues impersonate gerson throughout chapter 4 and battat impersonates mike

My theory is that the Mikes were initially intended to be the ‘secret boss’ of Ch3, but as Toby went on to develop the chapter further and further he changed plans to make the Secret fight more narratively impactful for the new chapters. But, he still really liked the Mikes and their fight, so he reworked them be a sort of ‘bonus secret boss’. The song’s freedom motif being a relic of its earlier idea… either that or Tricky Tony’s just messing with us again and it’s there to make everyone go insane.

I believe the reason is because of Mike and the freedom surrounding the theories and countless different interpretations of “Mike” that exist. It’s not anyone’s freedom motif, it’s the idea of freedom to believe in your own beliefs. You wanna think Mike is a cowboy? A cat? An actual microphone? Go ahead! It may not end up being canon, but you have the freedom to let Mike be whatever you want. At least that’s my way of seeing it.
