Thailand’s Military Attack on Cambodia Endangers UNESCO Heritage Sites and Civilians 24 July 2025 Today marks a dark and deeply distressing moment for Cambodia’s cultural identity—and for humanity as a whole. The Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, has come under direct attack from Thailand’s military forces. Aircraft and rocket fire were reported near the temple complex. Perched atop the Dangrek Mountains, this sacred site—treasured not only by Cambodians but by people around the world—has stood for centuries as a symbol of Khmer spirituality, architecture, and resilience. But today, it was turned into a war zone. Even more alarming, the attacks are not isolated. Armed clashes and shelling have erupted all along the Cambodia–Thailand border and are now spreading further into Cambodian territory. This is not just a border skirmish—it is a serious escalation that threatens the peace, sovereignty, and safety of our nation. No political dispute—no matter how complex—can ever justify the desecration of a World Heritage Site. Preah Vihear was built not for war, but for worship. It is a place that transcends borders, revered for its unique design, religious significance, and historical value. To see it become a target of armed conflict is nothing short of a tragedy. The damage extends far beyond Preah Vihear. Other ancient temples along the frontier—such as Prasat Ta Muen Thom and Ta Krobei—have also been affected by shelling and gunfire. Though less internationally known, these temples are no less sacred. They represent centuries of Khmer civilization and are part of the spiritual and historical landscape of Cambodia. More heartbreakingly, the conflict has endangered the lives of innocent Cambodian civilians. Homes have been destroyed. Families have fled. Children cry out in fear. Communities that once lived peacefully in the shadow of ancient temples are now being displaced by violence. These are not just attacks on stones and statues—they are attacks on people, on culture, and on our shared human legacy. As someone who deeply values Khmer history and works to preserve and share our heritage with the world, I find these events profoundly painful. I urge the international community, UNESCO, and all who care about cultural preservation and justice to stand with Cambodia and call for an immediate halt to these acts of aggression. We must protect our temples—not only for Cambodians, but for future generations around the world. History is not a battlefield. Let our sacred sites remain places of peace. – Kim History Challenge Cambodia
