This is a nuanced conversation. First of all, a Black trans woman’s access to love is not the same as a cis woman’s. It speaks to the same world that DL culture exists within. I’m not saying Laverne is above critique—there are privileges at play—but she is vocalizing something many queer and trans people live through and rarely say aloud: that in a supremacist, patriarchal society, there’s an entire subset of men who offer validation and desire to trans women only on very conditional terms. We can feel disappointed in her stance—and still hold some grace.

There is a difference in politics being different viewpoints on social housing free healthcare, etc and the denigration of the rights of others. If we have different points of views on the equal rights of human beings that’s not something we can just agree to disagree about.
