fun fact : when printing was first introduced it was mostly used by students since it was cheaper but was soon introduced into the younger kids and many of them couldn't be printed if aristocracy didn't approve of them as printing developed more and more ,aristocracy started approving of it but they tried to maintain the hand crafts like designing and penmanship and kept a close eye to make sure the tradition remained

if it was back then most us wouldn’t have been taught to read at all. parents had to pay for schooling and prior to the banning of child labour they’d have rather you toiling away at a machine than a book. by now we’d be dead or still toiling away in a factory

During that time period, most books were actually sold as just the bound paper printing. (Inside of the book). The purchaser would take the bound paper book to a book binder and have the book created for their specific collection.

The big reason is there are just different standards of craft. Books are more mass produced now (😔) and people don’t take pride in every book as they are consumed so fast now. That being said, if you look up Victorian article books you’ll see some mass production

This is just the bias that comes w history. The paperbacks from those times didn’t survive as well as the leather bound, causing leather to last for you to admire it.
