Without diving into a super detailed explication I might have first said,”a hit and miss engine is just like your car engine, but rather than regulate the engine speed by a throttle, speed control is regulated by denying the engine a power stroke when the engine is up to speed. This is accomplished by various ways but the most prevalant way is by either holding the exhaust valve open or by shorting the ignition.”

This explains the process very well! What I’ve still yet to learn is what they are used for. I’ve always seen them run just as a demonstration but never working or under any kind of load. What would be a typical use case for these engines?
