Thatch Ants Produce Medicine?! #mieren #ameisen #ant #ants #antsofinstagram #antsoftiktok #hormigas #fourmi #fourmis #naturephotography #naturelover #macroinsect #insects_macro #bugs #insect #queenant #insectsofinstagram #fauna #myrmecology #entomology #formicidae #antsofcanada #downtheanthill #canadianantshop #canadaantcolony #formica #thatchant #treeresin #antmedicine #antibiotics #medicalresearchers #science #antwar Transcript: Ant doctors have figured out how to make medicine to disinfect their colonies during disease outbreaks, and it might be effective against human super bugs. Formica paralugubris, the Thatch Ant live in colonies with up to half a million workers. Because they live in such densely packed societies, disease spreads super easily. And because insects have weaker immune systems, one bad epidemic can wipe out entire societies. Lots of ants have learned to spray venom as a disinfectant around their nests to kill disease, but thatch ants take it to the next level. Thatch ant doctors have learned to mix formic acid with different tree resins to create an antiseptic which turns anthills into disease proof bunkers. When sick ants come home, the antiseptics mixture covering the nest burn away bad germs or fungus looking to infiltrate the colony. These antibiotics work on humans too. Some ant medicines, like albomycin produced by harvester ants, kill antibiotic resistant bacteria like MRSA. And researchers are saying that we might be seeing new medicine based on drugs that ant chemists discovered first.
