I think you should but it up. Earlier you could have used a spacer board, as no saw forget it.

The "spacer board" is a nice look! I also reduces "toe catchers" 😳 if boards split/curl.
That is a difficult cut for us rookies with a skill saw! Crooked rip cut will look like crap!
Your home depot close? They can do cuts for a couple bucks. Likely free with your receipt.
Leave the gap for "spacer" and carry on for now is my suggestion.

You can make a track with a second peice of wood nailed to the price you want to cut so that the base plate can run along. Nobody can skill saw a straight line it wasn't meant for that. If you have clamps or lock jaws or screw and nail. Look up track saw for reference. It's better if you can place the wood flat somewhere with scrap wood underneath that can damaged. Even with a track it's a bit tricky. Stay safe dont do anything you're not comfortable with. Keep your fingers and legs away from behind the saw in case it binds and kicks back towards you. Set the skillsaw depth so it's just a bit more than needed to cut through.

Take some plywood and cut strips screw it to the top the length of the deck to use as a straight edged guide to make a nice and straight cut
