also... ancient Greeks use the same word to mean jellyfish, indicating her origin with Greece was always aquatic and sometimes she's was even portrayed as a mermaid (with what appear more like tentacles for her hair and fin, rather than snakes...)

Ovid is like had like the biggest beef with the gods so his rendition of the stories made them look bad. Ovid also was super misogynistic in his retellings of the stories (as has been mentioned by the og poster in the comments) so whenever someone mentions Ovid as a source to me I just 😵‍💫

I like the perspective of events where Minerva transforms Medusa as means to protect her, so no one can harm her in the way she was hurt in the temple again.

Even the Roman variation has variations. Telling misogynistic men about her head being the symbol of women’s shelters worldwide because in some accounts she wasn’t CURSED by Minerva but BLESSED to never be ravaged by man again. Further, there’s some collegiate shit I’ve gotten to read through that postulates Medusa(Roman equivalent again) was a POC captured and served as a priestess for safety, so the snake hair may be based in bigotry.

See I knew this but people don’t believe when you tell them the Greek origin story but I understand why women would want a strong Medusa tattooed on them

-So she was turned or born that way. Is it both? are there conflicting tales? -The thing about it being consensual and then Athena punishing her makes a lot more sense though.

in greece the image of medusas face was pretty commonly placed at the doorways of women's homes and brothels as a way to ward off evil spirits, and especially the evil eye

it isn't an uncommon theory that Ovid didn't beleive in the Roman Gods as he often potrayed them in this unfavorable way which wasn't a popular concept at the time. Minerva as a Roman Goddess was more associated with the political sphere than warfare, with Minerva herself representing the Emperor. Ovid having been banished by Emperor Augustus had many reasons to despise the rulers of Rome and likely wrote Minerva being unfair and unjust to symbolize his stance on anti-authority and his opposition to absolute power.

On the spelling thingy! I’ve noticed there isn’t a modern C in a lot of Ancient Greek names. I used to pronounce Phorcys like Four Seas, thinking it meant he was a God of Four Seas (M te yon timoun) but I learned it was pronounced like Four Keys! Similar to Circe being pronounce Kier-Kae, and Cerberus being pronounced KEr-Beros.
