As someone who used to suffer with these outbreaks frequently—things that cause flare ups: stress- (emotional or physical stress can weaken the immune system, making HSV-1 to reactivate.) illness- (having a cold, fever, or other infections (especially respiratory illness) — hence the name “fever blister.” Sun exposure- UV rays from sunlight can trigger flare-ups, especially on or around the lips. Hormonal changes- menstruation, pregnancy, or hormonal bc can sometimes prompt outbreaks. Weakened immune system- if you’re taking any immunosuppressant medications, that can increase the risk, as well as chemo and conditions like HIV/AIDS. Fatigue or lack of sleep- not getting enough rest can tax your immune system and set off a reoccurrence. Trauma to the area- dental procedures, facial injuries, or even harsh facial treatments (like chemical peels) can triggered a localized outbreak. Poor nutrition- a weakened immune response from inadequate nutrition may increase the risk. Cold weather or wind- dry, chapped lips from windburn or cold weather can provide an environment for a flare up. I recommend using a lip balm with spf on your lips. You can take antiviral medications (acyclovir, valacyclovir) if they’re frequent. Manage stress through mindfulness, rest, and relaxation techniques. Be sure to keep your immune strong. (Part 1)
