as a person who has not been allowed to bring their phone to school even as a high schooler, I can say it's not that much of a safety hazard. I understand that different people have different lives and different things can happen when they don't bring their phone, but with my experience, nothing has happened and I've been more than focused during lessons. whenever I am allowed to bring my phone to school using permits, I'm not focused at all because all I'm thinking about is when I can use my phone.

What’s also irritating is that putting locking our phones would take an unnecessary amount of time. There’s an easy solution to wanting kids to not use their phones during class: have those calculator pouches in every class and when the student walks in, they put it in and when they leave the get it. It’s the safest option because the phone is out of reach but still easy to get to contact someone in case of an emergency. This could be the best option but they don’t want to do that because it still leaves us in control and that’s what they want.

Instead of banning them, do what my school did, during class you put your phone in a box at the front of the class, then get it back during break. They let you have ur phone if you have a family issue or medical reasons.

Like what if there’s a serious emergency and we need to call 911, or something happens and you need your parent to pick you up? The people making these rules are all old and don’t understand what school is like nowadays and how dangerous it really is in this generation, I believe we shouldn’t be using them in class but we need our phones with us in our backpacks, makes no sense it will make some kids more distracted because they are worrying about something like a emergency where you need your phone. the rule makes absolutely no sense.

The biggest problem isn't phones, it's the kids who just don't want to be there, or focus, or put the effort in (coming from someone who struggles with school because I don't have the will to succeed), taking the phones away does nothing for a student who wasn't going to do work anyways. Students are crafty and WILL absolutely find distractions aside from their phone, because they don't WANT to be here, phone or not.

the school i went to (UK) had phones completely banned. if we were caught with them we had to hand them in to the office and they kept them until friday no matter what day it was. they refused to give them back until friday even if the child walked home alone or had a ticket for a train or bus on there. it’s just child endangerment at that point

Yeah, it's unnecessary and will do absolutely NOTHING.
In my school, phones haven't been banned yet, but you have to put them in a box every lesson when the bell rings. I understand their POV: they think phones are distracting us and stuff, but I find it funny how oblivious they are.
Phones don't distract us: bullying does, not wanting to learn does, boredom does and so many other reasons. No amount of banning stuff will make us more focused and less distracted.
Yes, some do use their phone during the lesson, but it's not like banning them will make them pay more attention.

Girl .. guys i dont get it im not old i wont say that “we didnt have phones and we were ok” i had a ds ipod touch when i was in elementary and middle school” we werent allowed those or iphones. In high school we werent allowed or iphones unless it was in the cafeteria a couple people snuck them. but majority looked at the teacher when she/he spoke and emgaged. Face it in this day and age everyones addicted to their phones and when kids are growing up they need to handle that addiction to a certain extent so something gets in your brain.

I agree to a point. But our district banned them and had a few swatting incidents: all the protocols for a swatting incident were done swiftly and safely and the police were on scene in all cases in less than 3 minutes. Police said it was easier without kids access to phones. Parents mucking up the parking lot to get their kid only adds to an already stressful and chaotic situation. It doesn’t help staff or emergency personnel do their job to secure the perimeter. It creates more problems:( I get it. I hate being without my phone too! But in an emergency? It’s better for everybody to diffuse the emergency quicker without phones.

I walk to & from school, I NEED to be able to contact my parents if anything happens. I’m not in the US & my school just has us keep them in our lockers & we’re not allowed to use them during the day & that works just fine and let’s us keep the safety of a phone

It's teaching kids to be sneaky and lie.. like what? Also for some kids it stresses them out that they always have to keep it hidden bc they're worrying about "is it still in my bag? can they see it? am I gonna get in trouble?"
