Re the changing nature of fic sites, i think one of the reasons for this shift is that ao3 is so user friendly and easy to navigate in a way similar to a social media site (tags, subscriptions, etc) it allows for isolated frictionless consumption vs in Ye Olden Days, reading fic on FF net/livejournal/forums required quite a bit of time and effort (rec lists, communities, events) that fostered participation and community norms

And ao3 specifically has an EXCLUDE filter 💀 ... so if you don't like something to the point of feeling the need to talk about it, just filter it out so it doesn't even come across your screen! It's not that complicated! (same for tumblr.. use the block tags option)

I swear people just don’t know how to scroll/ignore stuff anymore. If you just don’t like it block the creator or just scroll past my gosh 😭 some people don’t know how to behave in fandom spaces.

Also: people saying “ao3 is weird” or “xyz on ao3 is weird” is so baffling because like baby you searched for that. You were actively looking. That is how ao3 in particular is set up to work. So you can’t be mad at something that you searched for
