With one of the best trailers I’ve seen in a long time, I had high expectations for 28 Years Later. Unfortunately, it didn’t connect with me. To me, it just feels like setup. It’s all backstory and no substance, and other than a few minutes that were very touching, there wasn’t much to this movie. I It introduced a lot of ideas and concepts and left audiences with a ton of unanswered questions, but without the rest of the trilogy to explain these things, I think it has a hard time standing on its own. Trilogies are fine. We should expect some setup and background from the first movie in a trilogy. Batman Begins is brilliant. The Fellowship of the Ring is brilliant. Sam Raimi’s Spiderman is brilliant. Star Wars is brilliant. All excellent films on their own. 28 Years Later couldn’t do this for me. It felt like 20 minutes of backstory that could have been added to a more substantial movie. This recent trend is bothering me, where movies are used as setup for future movies, and not much more. If a movie can’t stand on its own, it’s not a great movie. I’d give this a 3/5, which for me is just passing as something I’d recommend people watch, but I expected a lot more given the team behind this.
