My grandma always said: ‘Wherever you go, don’t become the place but bring your culture with you.’ And that’s what we do: we adapt, but we carry our roots. With everything happening right now ICE raids, fear in our communities, and mass deportations I need to say this loud and clear: legal or not, immigrants are human beings. And we are essential. In 2023, undocumented households paid nearly $90 billion in taxes and held $299 billion in spending power, representing 4.9% of the U.S. workforce. If just 1.3 million were deported, the economy would shrink by 1.2%; removing all 8.3 million could reduce GDP by up to 7.4% by 2028. And in 2024, labor growth was largely driven by undocumented workers possibly two-thirds of all new jobs created that year. They say Latinos are a ‘threat,’ but in cities like New York, the real threat is the mental health and addiction crisis. I rarely see a Latino homeless most are out there hustling, self-employed, working multiple jobs, trying to build a better future. This country wouldn’t be what it is without us.
