The initial trigger came when Paetongtarn's government intensified its crackdown on telecom scams based in Poipet. For years, Cambodia, under Hun Sen’s leadership, had tolerated, if not protected, scam operations in that region, many of which specifically targeted Thai citizens. When Thailand publicly named Poipet, it embarrassed the Cambodian side. Facing public pressure, Hun Sen and his son chose to shift the focus by creating tension along the border. This was a calculated move: stirring up nationalism to cover up the scam issue and using the crisis to boost the son's image politically. But they clearly underestimated Thailand’s resolve, this time, Thailand is not bluffing. What could have been solved through joint efforts to combat transnational crime has now been turned into a political power play. In the end, it's ordinary people who bear the consequences.

Such an attack represents a grave breach of moral and legal norms, and underscores a deeply concerning disregard for civilian life by the Cambodian authorities.
