The law in Illinois is to ride your bike with the flow of traffic and you walk against the flow of traffic. How I understand it. If you are biking against the traffic a vehicle coming out of a street is looking at traffic coming at them (left) and then turns into the lane (right) they will not see the rider coming towards them from the right. If they were with the flow of traffic the driver would see them. That’s my understanding of why you should not ride against traffic on a bike.
