The Online Safety Act is a disaster. This isn’t just about 🌽 it affects freedom of expression small communities are already shutting down because they can’t afford to comply. Wikipedia has even considered pulling out of the UK. It hands more power to big tech by making it too expensive for small sites to survive and crushes UK tech competitiveness. It’s a massive privacy risk too, you’re expected to trust dozens of websites with your ID and sensitive data when we all know you shouldn’t even reuse passwords because no site is perfectly secure. Your rights are being restricted because some people are lazy parents who won’t use the effective parental controls that already exist. A properly configured combination of router-level filtering device-based parental controls firewall rules and account restrictions is not bypassable by a savvy child or even most adults. If the government genuinely wanted to help they could provide these tools and proper education on how to use them for free instead of pushing dangerous overreaching laws. Consider signing the petition to repeal the Online Safety Act and write to your MP to help stop this from getting worse.
