@tjarchitecture: 🇧🇬Bulgaria - infamous neighborhood of Lyulin: It is one of Sofia’s most infamous neighborhoods. A massive socialist-era housing district built in the late 1970s and 1980s on the city’s western edge. Named after the nearby mountain, it was designed as a model suburb with prefabricated panel buildings arranged in microrayons, offering efficient housing close to transport and services. But after the fall of communism, the area slipped into decline, with neglected infrastructure, rising unemployment, and growing social issues. Over the years, Lyulin gained a reputation for being rough and marginal, a concrete maze that feels forgotten by time. I visited Lyulin in January 2025. Even with snow covering the streets, the atmosphere felt heavy, quiet, and eerily frozen in the past. Some parts are improving, but many blocks still show the wear of decades of uncertainty and transition. Lyulin is more than just infamous. It’s a reflection of Bulgaria’s post-socialist struggle etched into concrete.
