My black mother paid my college tuition in full and gave me the down payment for my 1st home. People have asked if she won the lottery, sells *rugs, won a lawsuit, is a 304, etc. Never asked if she worked for years to build a successful business 🤷🏾

Deep down people can’t square Blackness or Black people growing up with wealth. That goes from everyone. Black and non Black alike. We are locked into a stereotype that to be Black is to struggle or come from struggle

If you grew up in NYC, Washington DC or other major cities you see families like this a lot: they go to the private schools. These schools are also full of international students.... the backlash and shock is probably mostly bc you are an interracial family!

What you are describing is “schema disruption”, “belief preservation” and “identity threat”. It’s also rooted in cognitive dissonance and psychological inflexibility. The mental discomfort or psychological stress experienced when a person holds two or more contradictory beliefs, values, or ideas…or when their existing worldview is challenged by new information.

I’m kinda glad white people are just “we’re all white” seems like a lot of animosity among shades of black.. too light, too dark etc. must be exhausting explaining ,not being able to just be. The new RL collection certainly opening my eyes to the racism within.

People love to say you’re out of touch with reality if you grew up privileged but why is being “underprivileged” the only universally accepted reality for ⚫️people? We should have empathy to understand each other’s different POVs.
