Man I got a child who is an A students in all his subjects including maths and sciences but because he's in government school he's only getting awards not recognition...if this was in a private school the opportunities will be wider. My point is, these kids are in private school and if they were in government school they wouldn't be known. My son gets norminated by government for spelling bee but after winning he only gets medals not recognition...my only option now is taking him to a private school so that he gets such opportunities

there are further factors to this, from a south african perspective. SA blacks have in large part only been joining the middle and upper class in the last 20-30 years so there's been less opportunity to enjoy the luxury of striving to these types of things. you've definitely hit the nail on the head with prioritising learning math and that would probably rank lower on their priority list because of multiple factors, chiefly among these is the poverty and more importantly the lack of support. i think ppl fail to understand how bad the level of education of the common black person is in south africa in the older generations and so neither them or the immediate communities have the skills to support, aid and teach those that could achieve. that being said, it's only a matter of time before these valid excuses run dry and then it comes squarely down to is it being prioritised.

Anyone that entered is given a chance to compete in the challenge, if you pass you qualify to the next stage, there is no colour involved. These kids write the maths Olympic and passed that’s how it’s chosen. Maths don’t see Colours. The answer is the answer. We are a rainbow nation and proud of who ever made it to the maths SA Team.

This is not just about being able to do the math though - the finances that go into the preparation for these competitions just elude those brilliant black students who are able to do the math... As a teacher I've seen many brilliant black kids nailing math daily, doing even better than their white counterparts but they do not have access to the money that allows them to enter in these competitions.

It's nothing to do with 'prioritising' maths. They are BETTER at maths. if the 5ft 0 unathletic kid 'prioritises' basketball, does he have a better shot of making the NBA than the 7ft kids in his class?

black students can get 50% to enter medical school, or engineering, whilst all other races must have an 85% pass rate. Black students in south africa are given priority over other races. the opportunities that they have over the past 31 years has been far greater than any other race in S.A.
