I did exactly this all the time when I was younger, the string was attached to my mom or dad when we went out and I had to walk around everything the same way they did. it still kinda happens sometimes

Makes sense to me. Mine as a kid was that when I cross the road, I have to make sure I'm not on it by the time a car goes past, even if I'm literally about to step on the pavement, or else my brain imagines "ripples" going from the car wheel to my foot and then, presumably, I die

there really is no unique experience, well for me it wasnt really a string but worked similarly, so vor example i had to turn the otherway to kinda "reset to default" ig

That's literally brilliant and no I'm not joking. Your mind is processing and memorizing your path of movement on an eidetic level and then it's mentally superimpossing the string image as a way to identify the path.
