@joelbervell: Right now, Gaza is facing one of the most severe humanitarian crises of our time. Reports from the UN and aid organizations have confirmed that food is being blocked at the borders. Malnutrition is rising. Children are starving. And even when the bombing stops, the damage won’t. Epigenetics, which is the study of how our environment affects gene expression, shows us how. During the “Dutch Hunger Winter”, babies exposed to famine in utero were more likely to develop chronic diseases decades later. Shockingly, their children carried those health risks too. What’s happening in Gaza isn’t just a crisis of food. It’s a crisis that could echo across generations. This is how violence embeds itself into the body. And why silence is never neutral. #Epigenetics #HumanRights #StarvationIsViolence #HealthJustice
When I first learned about epigenetics, my first thought was, Wow, if trauma changes us at a cellular level and is passed on then the seeds of resistance are too.

You don’t have to imagine. Look at the Jews that survived the holocaust. That trauma has been passed down. Always looking over our shoulders, wondering when the next shoe will drop. We keep our passports up to date and hide money , just in case.

the good news is that epigenetics shows that we are not doomed by our DNA.

I feel the same way about the disabled orphans in European countries who get tied to beds and left to fester and die and have been for the last 100 years with no change or media coverage . Also the kids in Africa whose genitals are mutilated and have been for 100s of years yet no one stops this or cares .

Can you talk about how you got into epigenetics? School wise?

This is why so many people don't want to have kids. Because why do you mean their great-grandchildren will have to emotionally and mentally endure what they endured even if those children weren't there?

learning about ireland's great hunger and bengal famine and how it has contributed to the predisposition of several health issues that is still prevalent today... I cannot imagine what Palestinians would have to deal with for generations to come.

couldn't imagine what my Malays ancestors went thru during JAPAN BRUTAL regime 🙏 and never received any apology at that
As someone whose country was colonised by different countries continuously for nearly 600 years... yes, the trauma is still there. My late grandmother was the last generation to experience colonisation and as the only grandchild and in the family taking psychology... Yes, yes the trauma is still strong.
