First, BC and AD aren't really used anymore. It's being replaced with BCE(Before Common Era), and CE(Common Era), so they're even losing that. And second, the beginning of the year actually used to be April 1st when the Julian calender was being used. It wasn't until the Gregorian calender being implemented in the 16 century that January became the start of the new year.
