I always play smarter characters with a profession. The character having a career before adventuring makes its easier to roleplay early on before the personality has developed.

playing the freak can be so entertaining. I'm playing a dhampir witch that suffers from hallucinations and specializes In illusions that said "I'm pretty sure I've seen something like that in the nightmares I give people," when a party member suggested touching something creepy.
