I recommend using stretchy fabrics for clothes for now, using your clothes for patterns, straight and zig zag stitch will be your best friend, learning hands on the difference between no stretch, 2 way stretch, and 4 way stretch. And keep a log with a decent sized sample of the fabric for all fabrics so that you can learn what fabrics do what and what setting you need on your machine. Additionally, change out your needles frequently, keeping the same one(even if it works) will damage your machine overtime and cause it to break and skip stitches(happened to my first).

I'll tell you what my grandma told me when I started learning. Once you learn to sew a strong straight line you can do anything. I havent proved her wrong yet. looks great!
