There’s a giant tailings pile in Spruce Pine NC that I am certain is going to collapse one of these days. If you drive by it the angle of the slope is terrifying. Only saving grace is that there’s no schools nearby but it could easily take out the homes and factory underneath it. There’s a church nearby too but I think there’s just enough of a curve in the terrain to protect it. It’s incredible that the company gets away with it too because they make insane amounts of money providing quartz to make semiconductors.

and none of the families were compensated for the loss of their children as far as I'm aware. as well as the coal mining lawyers arguing that the parents didn't suffer any emotional damage cuz they weren't attached to their own children
