the tolerant left is tolerant of people who just want to live their lives. trying to impose on other people's rights and free will is not the same as just letting people live their lives. the sooner people understand this, the sooner we can stop bringing up this paradox

The better way I’ve seen it described is tolerance is a social contract and once you opt out, you no longer get the benefit of being tolerated.

Disagreeing with gender theory, opposing radical ideologies, or supporting religious beliefs isn’t “intolerant” but it’s exercising free thought. The paradox was meant to guard against authoritarianism.

I had a HS teacher pose the question: are people who hate bigots, bigots themselves? Many said yes. Some of us countered no; being a bigot is a choice and a character flaw, and it overrides any good traits the bigot might have. It’s a different take on the paradox.

And this is what we get for not correctly punishing the Confederacy for defending and fighting for slavery ;and sympathizing more with a person's perceived idea of right to "property" than realizing that ownership of another human being is morally wrong. Reconstruction being short-lived, Black Codes, segregation, no universal healthcare or affordable higher education, policies and legislation that continue to promote intolerance to this day... all of this has led to the moment we're in right now 🙄 we've never learned

I read something once that, to me, at least, makes the paradox disappear. "How can the left claim to be tolerant when they don't tolerate intolerance?" Most people who say this see tolerance as a moral principle and say this makes the left hypocritical. But what if tolerance in society is seen as a social contract, not a moral principle. We all agree to be tolerant because society works better that way. In this case, intolerant people are breaking the contract. They aren't following the rules we set down. Therefore, by having broken the contract,by saying they refuse to abide by its rules, they have declared themselves outside the contract. Therefore, we no longer need to apply the contract to them and tolerate them.So no paradox.
