Growing Cucumbers From Seed! 🥒🌱 Cucumbers are one of my favourite summer crops to grow in the vegetable garden and like all crops when you’re growing your own there are so many more varieties to choose from. So as well as a few popular varieties such as ‘marketmore’ and ‘passandra’, I’m growing some rare and ancient ones too like ‘Kaiser Alexander’ and even ‘exploding cucumbers’… but more on that one later. 😂 I’d sow them straight into individual 9cm pots so you won’t need to pot up. And cucumber seedlings don’t like to be overwatered so ensure to use a free draining organic seed mix. Add some to your pot and compact slightly and just push them on their side into the compost as this can help reduce the possibility of the seed rotting. Then just add a small layer of your compost, around about 2-3 x the depth of the seed, water well and add a label. Cucumbers are heat loving plants so germinate best in temperatures around 21 degrees, so use a domed propagator and a heat mat if possible or just pop it on a sunny south facing windowsill. They should germinate within a week or so and even though the mature plant really needs a lot of water up until the first 3-4 weeks of the plants development it really doesn’t like to be overwatered, so watering sparingly. Once the plants have 3 true leaves, they are will be ready to plant out.
