yup. I was there in 2007/08. recognize several faces. they didn't even touch on the few kids who died in Teen Mania's care like my roommate, Tara Hearn. the whole thing was swept under the rug & we weren't allowed to talk about it or even go to her funeral.

I spent two years at in the internship and now close to 20 years deconstructing all of the lies and manipulation. I’m one of the few who married someone from the program and we both woke up to it and stayed married. 17 years later, we’re raising kids who won’t fall for the same tricks we did.

Watching these makes me want to call all the church leaders I grew up with and thanking them for being super moderate Methodists who were offended by the showiness of this movement and thought mission trips involved digging drainage ditches, painting houses, and packing meals. Still not perfect but….

Honestly I’ve seen miracles. God can do things like that. Just because it seems not plausible doesn’t mean it can’t happen. It means you haven’t had the opportunity to see it happen. I have multiple times in my life.

It wasn't related to TeenMania, but around the same time (late 90s) I went on a "mission" trip to Italy to mime "the gospel" to Italians. I didn't understand why being Catholic was considered a "sin", or what made our religion better than ours, but I wasn't allowed to ask those questions. I just had to perform and "worship".
I appreciate what you said at the end. I won't be watching the doc b/c I think it'll bring up too much, but I always watch your recaps & appreciate your takes.

Teen mania trip alumni 2000- they absolutely told us not to move- pouring sweat cause you know Thailand is humid and also one time in India- I also almost died haha not funny but I had to have an iv in the middle of nowhere India- the girl that I sorted it into my hand looked 12 but hey didn’t have a lot of options “where there are no drs” but we had no business being there- this documentary helped me a lot. I cried a lot

Being made to feel like we didn’t know how to pray hard enough. Or how to pray for the right things….

even so, you go to a village with grass huts and build a brick building for school or church, how do those people maintain that building you built for them? they cant. it falls into disrepair and ruins. then it becomes an obstacle in their community.

So much of this teaching seeped into youth groups, and Christian schools all over. The 90s and 2000s were a wild time to be a church kid. Still unlearning so much

The leg thing…. One of my daughters was born with club feet. Every. Single. Time. We went to get her casts changed…..this one lady…. “I am claiming his miraculous healing!! Her feet will be perfect as if there has never been a problem!” When her feet were not “perfect”, I was told we didn’t have enough faith.

I’m not active in church life any more (drifted away, no real big reason) but I am SO dang grateful I was in a church community during this same era where my summer mission work was serving in the community we lived with a coalition of all the various churches and we didn’t preach to those we served, we painted and roofed homes for elderly/low income in the community with supplies donated by the local hardware store owner. I am utterly FLOORED by these experiences that literal children had in foreign countries.

“Do all the people who never get a chance to learn about Jesus go to hell?” was literally the question my youth pastor yelled at me for asking. It started my whole journey out of religion.

The way they return and lied about things happening on the “mission trips” too. Kids trust these adults and they’re telling them how limbs are regrown, paralyzed people walked again, etc. It’s all lies and deceit.
