Most engineers never build things from scratch so they don’t gain any experience. When I first started my career I would pick a product anything and make a clone. One day I would make my own blog, another I would make an instagram clone. After 4 years I was lead engineer at a big scale up because of all the experience I had gained outside of work provided I could handle it. Before I left I was leading projects with up to 120 engineers, almost all with more years experience but less building systems. It’s also not for everyone, you can stop at a senior software engineer for life, many of my friends are. It’s all about your passion.

I think it’s less we don’t know how to code and more that we don’t know/understand system design well. Like I thought I knew coding but I was asked how I think uber would work and I was wayy wrong. There are a lot of things going on and we just learn syntaxes without real world applications.

All these new grads don't know how to code independently. They've been using LLM's to cheat their way throughout their degree, and they are using Cursor to vibe code their personal apps. High school kids are also cheating now using LLM's and all those future college grads will suffer the same issue.
