If someone needs an example of this in fiction, I recommend watching Heartbreak High. The autistic character is played by an actually autistic person, they made adjustments to the scripts based on the actress’s feedback, and imo you get a good mix of things going great and things going awful.

Not me sobbing bc I was stuck on a chapter for a year, then I decided that the solution was for her meltdown from 2 nights before to flare up again. Why? Bc realistically,my audhd azz would be disregulated or overstimulated for a week in her situation. All week I've doubted my choice for doing it, but now I'm not. Thank you. And, yes, she has a supportive friend who let's her melt down without judgment
