@philosophyminis: When you first meet someone, you're often forced into small talk, and it's usually only a matter of time before someone says, "So, what do you do for a job?" That question makes sense, because most people spend about a third of their lives at work. But according to Aristotle, it's a poor way to really understand someone. How much can you actually learn about a person from what they do to earn a living? For Aristotle, a much better question would be: "How do you spend your leisure time?" Work has a practical purpose. We do it to earn money, to put food on the table, to keep the heating on in the winter. But the purpose of human life, for Aristotle, is not just to survive, but to thrive. To develop character, to pursue excellence, and to live a life of meaning. And that happens not during the necessary hours of labour, but in the time outside of work. Leisure is where we feed the parts of ourselves that make us human. It's where we build relationships, explore hobbies, learn new things, and take wonder in the world around us. A robot can work all day in a factory, and in doing so it is defined by its function. But a robot starts to become a person when it goes home to play with its dog. A robot becomes a person when it goes birdwatching, or calls its mother, or opens a book. Spare time is not spare. It is the only time we have to truly be human.

In Aristotle's time most people didn't choose their profession, meanwhile today, the profession somebody chooses can say a lot about them

I prefer, "if you didn't have to work for money, what would your day to day life look like?"

Start off with "How much do you hate your work?" to find that common ground.

I feel like in Australia it’s not as common to ask this. Like it does happen especially when professionals network. But if you’re having small talk at a party or some random on the street as you pat their dog, like people don’t really ask I find. Although I am a bit out of touch these days.

How are people supposed to place you on the social hierarchy if they don’t know how prestigious your job is? Can’t be wasting time chatting to the undesirables.

i find that if i ask people what they do in their free time it's always walking or travelling. While their work often tells alot more about the person. Both questions should be asked

People get surprised when I ask what they do when not working. There's surprisingly many that doesn't do anything but stare at the TV. No stamp or coin collecting, social hobbies etc.

in Greek, με τί α-σχολείστε;basically how do u spend your leisure time? or what do u do away from school? this has to do with the structure of language. It cannot be translated directly in english

Do you live to work or work to live? I used to live to work. I don't anymore. I do love my job but love leaving work also. oddly enough I've stopped asking people what they do for a living.
