Dark Souls 3 isn’t a top 3 soulsborne — argue with an invisible wall. It’s funny how the three best soulsbornes — Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring — don’t even have “Souls” in their name. I’m struggling to think of anything Dark Souls 3 is best at out of all the soulsbornes. Music? Nope, that’s Bloodborne. Bosses? Nope, that’s Sekiro. Lore? Nope, also Bloodborne. Replayability? Nope, that’s Elden Ring. At least DS3 is the runner-up for mosy categories regarding game design. “Jack of all trades, master of none” essentially. It’s no wonder many people recommend it as someone’s first soulsborne, but I still find it a tad overrated over all. It has some if the best bosses like Midir, Gael, Twin Princes, Pontiff, and the Demon Princes, but also some of the worst like Wolnir, Deacons, Ancient Wyvern, and Yhorm. Yes, Yhorm sucks. The first half of the game in general isn’t all that amazing to me, honestly, and it only has a couple of good bosses, however, most of the areas stink. That’s really my main issue with DS3 and it’s what’s keeping me from replaying the game. The areas are generally annoying, dull, or boring. I think there are a few exceptions, as the Grand Archive and the upper part of Cathedral of the Deep are pretty great, but the rest of it is a slog. Even on my first save, I just kept slogging through the areas because I knew the bosses would be worth it. They were, but I don’t feel as motivated to fight them because of the areas in- between. I’ve beaten Elden Ring 12 times, Sekiro 6 times, Bloodborne 3 times, and DS3 only once. I tried doing it again, seeing if I just didn’t “get it” — like I didn’t with Bloodborne at first, but I just stopped after Pontiff this time because I came across the boring dungeon that is Anor Londo. I have to admit, the DLCs are great, but I still think Bloodborne has the best soulsborne DLC in terms of how necessary it feels to get along with the game, if that makes sense. Like, if you play Bloodborne; you NEED to get the DLC as well. You can say the same for the Ringed City because of its thematic relevance to the story and it serving as an epilogue to the trilogy, but I don’t think it’s essential to the extent that the Old Hunters is. Friede, Gael, and especially Midir are fantastic, however. I think Halflight is overhated, though I can’t relate to many people’s experience with him because I play exclusively offline. The mini-“quest” where you turn into that blob of humanity is really dumb though, and I don’t think DS3’s quest design is that good, but that applies to the whole genre. I like Seigward, Patches, and the “gives me conniptions” guy.
