LISTEN UP⚠️ (Save this for planning your trip) This Winter (2023/24) will be the best time to see the northern lights until 2034/35 Here’s all the important information you need to know: SOLAR PHYSICISTS ARE PREDICTING WINTER 2023-24 AS THE BEST TIME TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN THE NEXT 11 YEARS Solar maximums cycle in anywhere between 10-15 years. Although you CAN see the northern lights almost every year, this year will be the most frequent opportunities to catch them dancing overhead with all the magnificent colors you see on photos and posts. Where can you see them? Technically the best places to see them in the northern hemisphere are anywhere north of the 45th parallel but your BEST opportunities are going to be found in these places… 1. Fairbanks, Alaska 🇺🇸 2. Tromsø, Norway 🇳🇴 3. Lapland, Finland 🇫🇮 4. Orkney, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 5. Yellowknife, Canada 🇨🇦 6. Churchill, Canada 🇨🇦 7. Jukkasjärvi, Sweden 🇸🇪 8. Reykjavik, Iceland 🇮🇸 How to find them once you’re in these locations: I use 2 apps to determine the “KP Levels” and I use another app to determine the cloud cover. Keep in mind a KP level of 3 or higher will be visible to the naked eye. Kp 5-9 will light the sky up. This Timelapse was during a KP 6 1. Aurora forecast 2. My Aurora forecast pro 3. Astrospheric (cloud cover app) Camera gear: 1. iPhone will work on a tripod with a long exposure 2. DSLR/ mirrorless camera 3. lens that has an aperture less than f4 (2.8 and lower is best) 4. Tripod @promasterphoto If you don’t feel like doing any planning and want to have a guide take care of it for you just book a trip with us @backcountry_journeys My gear for this shot: Camera: Sony alpha 1 @sonyalpha Lens: 14mm prime 1.8 gmaster @sonyalpha Tripod: promaster (SPECIALIST SERIES SP425CK PROFESSIONAL CARBON FIBER TRIPOD KIT WITH HEAD) @promaster #northernlights #auroraborealis #fairbanks #sonyalpha #nightskyphotography
